Stunning, Fantastic, Magnificent, Majestic — Then Meh
The Hallmark Unicorn ornament series launched in 2019 under the Shoebox product line — Hallmark's line of lighthearted, humor-friendly ornaments that sits alongside the more traditional Keepsake catalog. Debra Nielsen sculpted the founding entry: a white unicorn with a pearlized sheen, glittery horn and hooves, pink flower details, and a pink ribbon attachment. 4.25" × 4.25" × 1.13". Not dated. Stunning, per the title. "You will be stunned by this lovely unicorn."
Nielsen returned each subsequent year for the same assignment — a new unicorn, a new adjective, the same pearlized sheen and glittery horn-and-hooves formula with variation in color, flower details, and ribbon. Fantastic in 2020 (lavender flowers, light blue ribbon). Fantastic again in 2021 (5.0" wide, the largest in the series, pink ribbon). Magnificent in 2022 (sunny yellow ribbon). Majestic in 2023. Then 2024 produced the most interesting moment in the collection's six-year history: alongside the Sweet Unicorn (returning to the classic formula), Hallmark released the Meh Unicorn — a unicorn with an ombré rainbow mane, a candy cane held in its hooves, and an expression of profound disinterest. Caption: "Christmas again? Seriously?" The Hallmark Shoebox line exists specifically for this kind of tonal gear-shift, and the Meh Unicorn is the series' most memorable entry precisely because it refuses to be stunning, fantastic, magnificent, or majestic. It is meh. That is enough.

Debra Nielsen is the sole artist across all seven Unicorn ornaments — 2019 Stunning through 2024 Meh and Sweet. Her consistent involvement gives the series an unusual artistic coherence: the same hands that made the Stunning Unicorn in 2019 also made the Meh Unicorn in 2024. Nielsen works extensively in the Hallmark porcelain and resin traditions, also sculpting the 2018 African-American Holiday Barbie and numerous other Keepsake entries. The fact that she sculpted both the earnestly majestic unicorns and the thoroughly unimpressed Meh Unicorn suggests that the Meh is not a break from the series but a comment on it — the artist who has made stunning unicorns for five years deciding, in 2024, to also make one who simply doesn't care.
🦄 The Meh Unicorn — "Christmas again? Seriously?"
The 2024 Meh Unicorn (QGO2901, 2.3" × 3.6" × 1.75") is from Hallmark's Shoebox line — the humor-forward product line that also produced the Oscar the Grouch Peekbuster. It is the only ornament in the Unicorn collection that is explicitly funny. Ombré rainbow mane. Candy cane in hoof. Expression of complete and total indifference. The base reads: "Christmas again? Seriously?" It makes an ideal gift for the person in your life who has been celebrating Christmas for enough decades that the novelty has faded slightly. They will recognize themselves. It is also Debra Nielsen, the same artist who made five glittering majestic unicorns before this one, so there is an art-historical joke embedded in the design that rewards attention.

The 2021 entry is the widest in the collection at 5.0" × 3.38" × 1.5" — notably larger than the 2020 (4.25" × 3.0") and the 2024 Meh (2.3" × 3.6"). For a complete collection display, position the 2021 at the visual center or slightly elevated, and arrange the others around it by size.
