“Each One Represents a Unique Cultural Heritage”

The Joyful Santa series launched in 1999 as Hallmark’s celebration of the African American Santa Claus tradition — a three-year, three-ornament commitment to depicting Santa Claus in the distinct costumes and spirit of African American holiday celebration. Sculptor Robert Chad created all three entries at 5 inches tall, each featuring a different Joyful Santa in a different colorful costume. The founding 1999 entry (QX6949) wears a colorful vest and a hat trimmed with holly, carrying a large wooden pole or cane, and is now in The Henry Ford’s permanent collections.

The Joyful Santa series belongs to a broader tradition of culturally inclusive Santa ornaments at Hallmark — alongside the African American Holiday Barbie series, the African American Nativity, and others — that reflect Hallmark’s recognition that the figures of American Christmas tradition belong to and are celebrated by all communities. Each of the three Joyful Santas wears distinctive holiday attire that, as the box text states, “reflects the essence of the African-American tradition.” Three years. Three Santas. One complete series. All three here.

Tips for the Complete Collection

  • 01
Display all three together as the complete cultural portrait they were designed to be. The Joyful Santa series was conceived as a three-year commitment from the outset — "a different Joyful Santa will appear each year" for three years. The three entries together form a complete portrait of the African American Santa tradition through three distinct costumes. Display them as a unified trio on adjacent branches or a dedicated shelf where all three can be seen and appreciated together.
  • 02
The 1999 #1 is in The Henry Ford — give it the leading position. The founding entry (QX6949, 5 inches high, colorful vest, holly-trimmed hat, wooden cane) is museum-recognized and the series’ founding statement. Position it at the head of the three-entry display as both the first in the series and the most historically significant entry.
