“The Mother is Looking Over the Newborn Baby”

The Safe and Snug series launched in 2001 with one of the most warmly universal premises in Hallmark’s animal ornament catalog: a mother animal looking over her newborn baby, a different species each year. The series description captures it exactly — “a mother animal and her baby. Each year is a different animal type. The mother is looking over the newborn baby.” The 2001 founding entry (QX8342) features a mother penguin and her chick — one of the most naturally cozy images in the animal world, the penguin keeping her egg or chick warm against the Antarctic cold. Porcelain, and immediately beloved by penguin collectors.

The 2002 polar bear entry (#2, QX8036) continues the cold-climate theme from penguins: a mother polar bear and her cub, porcelain, the same protective maternal warmth in the Arctic snow. The 2003 raccoon entry (#3, QX8217) closes the series with a woodland mammal — a mother raccoon and her kit, the most North American of the three animals, the series ending in the temperate forest after two cold-climate entries. Three species. Three moments of maternal warmth. Three ornaments that work equally well as Christmas decorations, nursery gifts, or additions to a penguin, polar bear, or raccoon collector’s collection.

Tips for the Collection

  • 01
Display all three together as a complete family portrait series — three mothers, three babies, three moments of warmth. The Safe and Snug series works best as a unified display: the penguin family, the polar bear family, and the raccoon family grouped together on adjacent branches or a shelf. The three porcelain pieces share the same scale and maternal theme; displayed as a trio they create a complete “safe and snug” winter animal family gallery.

These porcelain ornaments make exceptional gifts for new mothers, baby showers, or nurseries — the mother-and-baby theme translates beyond Christmas. The Safe and Snug series is the rare Hallmark series that works as year-round nursery decor as well as a Christmas ornament. A mother penguin and chick, a polar bear and cub, a raccoon and her kit — each is a porcelain mother-baby figure that works on a nursery shelf, a baby gift table, or as a Christmas ornament for a family with a new baby.

A mother penguin and her chick in 2001 — porcelain, safe and snug against the Antarctic cold. A polar bear and her cub in 2002, the same Arctic warmth in a different form. And in 2003, a mother raccoon and her kit in the woodland, the series ending in the temperate forest. Three mothers. Three babies. Three species. “The mother is looking over the newborn baby.” Safe and snug. All three here.
