Mark Newman — The Majestic Wilderness Artist

Mark Newman's name appears across the Majestic Wilderness brand dating back to Hallmark Galleries releases in 1991 — the Grizzly Bear sculpture, the Black Bear Limited Edition figurine, and the Raccoons figurine all carry his name in the Majestic Wilderness brand. The 1997–2000 ornament series extends his wildlife sculpting tradition into the Keepsake format. Newman's wildlife work is characterized by naturalistic animal groupings in seasonal settings — animals at rest, at play, or in their natural habitat with habitat detail (stone walls, forest undergrowth, winter snow) integrated into the base or setting.

North American Wildlife in Winter — The Complete Majestic Wilderness Keepsake Series

The Majestic Wilderness brand predates the Keepsake ornament series by six years — Hallmark Galleries began releasing Mark Newman's Majestic Wilderness wildlife sculptures and limited edition figurines in 1991, starting with the Grizzly Bear. The ornament series launched in 1997 as an extension of that established brand: four Keepsake ornaments, one per year through 2000, each depicting a different North American species in a naturalistic winter or forest setting. The founding 1997 entry captures three snowshoe rabbits huddled under a snow-covered stone wall — the particular species chosen for its winter camouflage (the snowshoe hare's white winter coat) and its association with the deep quiet of the boreal winter landscape.

The 1998 Timber Wolves at Play (#2, QX6273) brings the most social and dramatic animal in the series — wolf packs playing together, the behavior that biologists note is essential to pack bonding. The 1999 Curious Raccoons (#3, QX6287) introduces a species known for its investigative intelligence and distinctively masked face. And the 2000 Foxes in the Forest (#4, QX6794, Final) closes the series with one of North America's most visually striking mammals — the red fox in a forest setting, the last wilderness scene in a four-year tour of the continent's wildlife.

Tips for the Collection

  • 01
Display in numbered sequence as a wildlife tour — four species, four habitats, four years. The Majestic Wilderness series reads best in number order: rabbits in winter (#1) → wolves at play (#2) → raccoons (#3) → foxes in the forest (#4 Final). The progression moves from the open snowy landscape of the rabbits through the sociable wolves and investigative raccoons to the solitary forest fox. In sequence on adjacent branches or a nature-themed shelf display, the four entries create a quiet panorama of the North American wilderness.

These ornaments can also stand as figurines — consider a shelf or mantel display alongside the Majestic Wilderness sculptures if you collect both. The Curious Raccoons entry (1999) is specifically noted as working as a standing figurine, and the format applies broadly to the series' naturalistic base designs. On a bookshelf or nature-display shelf, the four Majestic Wilderness ornaments extend the same aesthetic as the Hallmark Galleries Majestic Wilderness sculptures that Mark Newman began in 1991.

Mark Newman began sculpting the Majestic Wilderness for Hallmark Galleries in 1991 — the Grizzly Bear, the Black Bear. In 1997 the Keepsake ornament series began: three snowshoe rabbits under a snow-covered stone wall, their white winter coats against the grey stone. Timber wolves playing in 1998. Curious raccoons in 1999. Foxes in the forest in 2000, the series complete. Four ornaments. Four North American species. The quiet, still, majestic wilderness on the Christmas tree. All four here.
