The Kittens in Toyland series carries the QXM prefix — Hallmark's Miniature Keepsake format, significantly smaller than standard QX ornaments. These are genuinely tiny ornaments: a miniature kitten on a miniature toy, with fine handcrafted detail at a scale designed for miniature trees, shadow box displays, or advent calendar applications. On a full-size Christmas tree they will be very small but charming; on a miniature tabletop tree they are exactly the right scale. The Kittens in Toyland series launched in 1988 as part of Hallmark's Miniature Keepsake line — a sub-catalog of the Keepsake program featuring ornaments in the QXM miniature format, significantly smaller than standard entries. The series ran for five consecutive years through 1992, with a new kitten and a new toy each year: a train in 1988 (the founding "Kitten on a Train," QXM5621), a scooter in 1989, a sailboat in 1990, a toy vehicle in 1991, and a pogo stick in 1992 to close the series — "Kitty On His Pogo Stick," the most energetic exit a kitten ever made from a Hallmark series.
The premise is pure holiday charm: a kitten — that most self-possessed and independent of animals — enthusiastically aboard a toy, riding it with the complete commitment that only a kitten can bring to any pursuit it has decided matters. Each entry is handcrafted in the QXM miniature format, with the fine detail that Hallmark brought to its miniature line.
