The Keepsake Cupcakes series did something that almost no other Hallmark Keepsake collection has attempted: instead of arriving once a year at Christmas, it arrived once a month across an entire calendar year. Thirteen cupcake ornaments, released on a monthly schedule from 2015 into 2016, each one timed to a specific holiday or seasonal celebration. New Year's. Valentine's Day. St. Patrick's Day. Easter. Spring. Summer. Independence Day. Fall. Halloween. Thanksgiving. Christmas — and then a thirteenth, the Baker's Dozen, completing the set with a wink at its own completeness.
The format of each ornament is the same: a cupcake, frosted in colors appropriate to the season, with a holiday-themed character emerging from the top. The New Year's Snowman wears his party hat and blows his horn. The Valentine's pig — Little Cupiggy — is armed with an arrow full of frosted love. The St. Patrick's Day leprechaun (Lucky Leap-rechaun) leaps from a green cupcake. The fall fox (Sly and Sweet) jumps out of autumn leaves covering a green foil-wrapped cupcake. The Halloween cat (Punkin' Kitty) emerges from orange and purple frosting in a witch's hat.
Each cupcake has a flat base — which means each can be displayed standing in the optional Hallmark cupcake stand as well as hung from a tree. Three Hallmark Artists, One Baker's Dozen
The Keepsake Cupcakes series drew from multiple Hallmark Keepsake artists across its thirteen entries — a natural consequence of releasing one ornament per month across an extended calendar rather than a single annual entry. Three confirmed artists contributed entries, each bringing their characteristic approach to the cupcake format.
Gaughran sculpted the Halloween entry — the black cat in the blue witch's hat emerging from orange and purple Halloween frosting. The cupcake's ridged orange top reads immediately as a pumpkin, the green leaf accent completing the illusion.
Haddix — also the artist behind Cool Decade, Frosty Fun Decade, and A Visit from Santa — contributed the fall entry: a sly fox leaping from autumn leaves covering a green foil-wrapped cupcake. A natural fit for an artist known for seasonal animal characters.
Aube sculpted the Valentine's Day entry — Little Cupiggy, a pig with an arrow full of frosted love, the seventh monthly installment and one of the series' most character-driven pieces in its holiday pun-name tradition.
Baker's Dozen — #13
The series closes with a wink: the thirteenth cupcake is called Baker's Dozen. Thirteen is a baker's dozen — the extra one that completes the count. Closing a thirteen-entry monthly series with a cupcake called Baker's Dozen is the kind of self-aware naming that makes the series' titles one of its best features. The series knew it had thirteen entries; it put that number in the name of the last one and made it the Christmas cupcake at the same time.
