Orange Track, Redline Tires, and the Die-Cast That Conquered Christmas
Hot Wheels launched on May 18, 1968 — designed by Harry Bradley, produced by Mattel, initially a set of 16 die-cast cars with Spectraflame paint, redline tires, and a performance that made competing die-cast cars look slow. The original 16 cars — which included the Beatnik Bandit, the Hot Heap, the Jet Threat, and others — were aimed at a market that Mattel believed wanted cars that actually performed. The first year sold 16 million cars. By the time Hallmark produced the 1995 "My First Hot Wheels" ornament, the brand was celebrating its 27th year and had sold billions of cars worldwide. The 1998 Hallmark anniversary ornament celebrated Hot Wheels' 30th birthday with the Silhouette 6209 — one of those original 16 custom classics — on a bright orange race track with the classic Hot Wheels flame symbol.
The 1995 "My First Hot Wheels" is the collection's most technically ambitious entry: a Magic Light & Motion ornament designed by Ken Crow that features a scene of Santa and a boy with his dog on Christmas morning, a Hot Wheels track with a loop, and cars that actually move when the ornament is connected to a light string. At the flip of a switch, the Hot Wheels cars loop around the track and through the loop. The Henry Ford recognized it as culturally significant and added it to their collection. It is one of the most elaborate Magic ornaments Hallmark produced in the 1990s and one of the most beloved Hot Wheels Keepsakes among collectors.

Bone Shaker — 2024 · Wheels Turn
After a 25-year gap, Hot Wheels returned to the Hallmark Keepsake catalog in 2024 — not with a standard die-cast car but with the Bone Shaker from the Hot Wheels Monster Trucks line. Artist Timothy Bishop. 2" × 1.73" × 2.87". Wheels turn. The Bone Shaker is one of the most iconic designs in the Monster Trucks line — debuted in 2006, featuring an exposed engine in the front, a skull-themed front grille, red and black paint, flames. "Inspired by the popular Bone Shaker oversized vehicle, the rugged Monster Truck design features giant wheels that turn and the iconic red and black paint job complete with flames and skull artwork." A smash hit for Hot Wheels collectors and Monster Trucks fans alike. The wait was worth it.

The 1995 Magic Light & Motion ornament plugs into any light string socket to power both the lights and the car motion. Position it close to a light strand on the tree and ensure the switch on the back or bottom is accessible. When connected and switched on, the cars loop around the track. Not for use with blinking light strings. Ken Crow's masterwork deserves the prominent placement its interactivity requires.
