"Who You Gonna Call?" — From 1984 to 2025, On the Hallmark Tree

Ghostbusters was released on June 8, 1984 — directed by Ivan Reitman, written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as four parapsychology researchers who set up a ghost-removal business in New York City. The film grossed $295 million worldwide against a $30 million budget, became the highest-grossing comedy of 1984, and introduced Ray Parker Jr.'s theme song — one of the most recognizable film themes in history. The theme plays on Hallmark's 2009 ECTO-1 Magic Sound ornament when you press the button. The 2009 ECTO-1 (QXI1235, 4¾" wide, 3 LR44 batteries included) is in The Henry Ford museum and is listed as NOTED RARE — its box text reading: "Is there something strange in your neighborhood? If so, you may hear the unmistakeable siren of the ECTO-1 as it speeds the Ghostbusters to the scene of the slime."

The Hallmark collection covers three distinct franchise chapters. The original 1984 film: the 2009 ECTO-1, the 2012 Stay Puft Marshmallow Menace (Magic Sound), the 2019 35th Anniversary ECTO-1 reissue (Magic Sound & Light), the 2019 Dr. Peter Venkman (Magic Sound — Bill Murray's character speaks film lines), and the 2024 "Roast Him!" (Magic Light & Sound — Stay Puft being toasted by proton streams). Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021, directed by Jason Reitman): the 2021 Mini-Pufts in cocoa mug and the 2021 SDCC Exclusive ECTO-1 & R.T.V. ornament set (limited to 3,000, San Diego and New York Comic Con exclusive, the Afterlife-era Ecto-1 paired with the Remote Trap Vehicle that plays a key role in the film). The broader franchise: the 2025 Slimer, for the green ghost who started as a villain and became the franchise's most beloved secondary character.

"Is there something strange in your neighborhood? If so, you may hear the unmistakeable siren of the ECTO-1 as it speeds the Ghostbusters to the 'scene of the slime.' In the hilarious 1984 comedy, this modified 1959 Cadillac became a common sight around New York City as ghost sightings sky-rocketed. Press the button on the ornament to hear music from the unforgettable 'Ghostbusters' theme song!"

Tips for the Collection

  • 01
The 2009 ECTO-1 is in The Henry Ford and is Noted Rare — give it prominent placement and replace the batteries first. QXI1235 plays the Ghostbusters theme song when pressed. The LR44 batteries may need replacing if the ornament has been stored since 2009. Three fresh LR44s and the theme plays exactly as designed. Position it at eye level on an accessible branch — it is the most culturally recognized ornament in the collection and should be treated accordingly.
  • 02
The 2021 SDCC ECTO-1 & R.T.V. is limited to 3,000 — the rarest Ghostbusters Keepsake in the catalog. The QMP4122 Afterlife ECTO-1 and Remote Trap Vehicle set was produced in a limited edition of 3,000 for San Diego and New York Comic Con 2021. If you have it, display it with the distinction it deserves — near the 2009 ECTO-1 as the two-vehicle Ecto pair across four decades of the franchise.
  • 03
Display all three ECTO-1 variants together as the evolution of the car across the franchise. The 2009 original-film ECTO-1 (QXI1235, plays theme song), the 2019 35th Anniversary ECTO-1 (QXI3639, Magic Sound & Light, upgraded details), and the 2021 SDCC Afterlife ECTO-1 with R.T.V. (QMP4122) represent the car's three decades on screen — 1984, 2019, 2021 Afterlife. Three variants. One car.

Ray Parker Jr. wrote the Ghostbusters theme song in 1984 — and Hallmark put it on a 4¾-inch ornament in 2009, press the button and it plays from the modified 1959 Cadillac ECTO-1, noted rare, now in The Henry Ford. Stay Puft in 2012. The 35th Anniversary in 2019 — both the car and Bill Murray's Venkman speaking film lines. Mini-Pufts in a hot cocoa mug in 2021, and the SDCC Exclusive ECTO-1 & R.T.V. limited to 3,000, sold out at Comic Con.
