"Celebrate the Merry Nineties!" — A Different Animal for Every Year

The Fabulous Decade series launched in 1990 as Hallmark's celebration of the incoming decade — a ten-ornament commitment from the outset, designed to produce one new woodland or domestic animal per year, each one holding a brass tag with that year's date. Artist Ed Seale sculpted the founding 1990 entry: a squirrel, 1½ inches high, handcrafted and brass-dated 1990. The squirrel holds a gleaming brass "1990" tag — the first year of the fabulous decade the series is named for. The premise is simple, warm, and perfectly suited to annual collecting: one new animal per year, one new brass year, a decade of Christmas trees each adding one more small creature to the display.

The ten animals are: Squirrel (1990), Raccoon (1991), Bear (1992), Skunk (1993), White Rabbit (1994), Otter (1995), Fox (1996), Hedgehog (1997), Polar Bear (1998), and an orange tabby kitten (1999) — who closes the decade and the series. Each entry came in its own box with a verse specific to that animal and that year — the hedgehog's pleasure that his number is seven, the polar bear leaving the ice because he thinks it's great that it's '98, the skunk with a nose for a year full of fun. The Fabulous Decade series was the first of three such decade series from Hallmark — followed by Cool Decade (2000–2009) and Frosty Fun Decade (2010s) — a tradition that ran across three full decades of Christmas collecting.

"The Hallmark Fabulous Decade series ornaments are designed to commemorate the decade of the 1990s. Each ornament highlights one year, crafted with intricate details and a different animal each year. These ornaments are perfect for those who appreciate history, nostalgia, and to commemorate each year."

Tips for the Complete Collection

  • 01
Display in number order — the brass year tags read as a complete decade in sequence. The Fabulous Decade series is designed to be displayed in consecutive number order: #1 Squirrel (1990) through #10 Orange Tabby (1999). The brass year tags on each animal create a visual countdown of the decade that only reads properly when the animals are in sequence. Left to right, 1990 to 1999, the full decade of the nineties on one branch or shelf.
  • 02
These are small — 1½" H — designed for a prominent branch position where the brass tag and detail are visible. At 1½ inches tall, each Fabulous Decade animal is compact. Position them on outer front branches at close-to-eye-level where the brass year tag catches the light and the handcrafted animal detail rewards close inspection. A dedicated lower branch where the complete decade can be arranged in order is the ideal display setup.
  • 03
The orange tabby kitten in 1999 is one of the collection's most universally appealing entries — display it prominently as the final word. The 1999 orange tabby closes both the series and the decade. If you have a "best" position on the tree, the final entry of a 10-year commitment to a single collecting premise deserves it.

A squirrel with a glowing brass "1990" tag, 1½ inches tall, first in a series that had committed to doing this for an entire decade. A raccoon in 1991. A bear in 1992. A skunk who had a nose for a year full of fun in 1993. A white rabbit in 1994. An otter in 1995. A fox in 1996. A hedgehog who liked the seven best because it was his to hold in 1997. A polar bear who left the ice because he wanted the world to know it was '98. And an orange tabby kitten in 1999, closing the decade and the series, the last of ten animals who celebrated the merry nineties one brass year at a time. Ten ornaments. Ten years. The complete Fabulous Decade. All ten here.
