Frank Herbert's Dune was published in 1965 — a science fiction novel set in the far future on a desert planet called Arrakis, the only source in the universe of a substance called spice melange that enables interstellar travel and extends human life. The novel follows Paul Atreides, the son of a noble family sent to govern Arrakis, who is swept up in the planet's political upheaval and gradually comes to fulfill a prophecy among the indigenous Fremen people. Dune is widely considered the best-selling science fiction novel of all time and has been adapted multiple times — most memorably in David Lynch's 1984 version and then, definitively, in Denis Villeneuve's two-part film adaptation: Dune: Part One (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024).
Villeneuve's Dune — with Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, and Javier Bardem in supporting roles — won six Academy Awards for Dune: Part One including Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. Dune: Part Two was the highest-grossing film of early 2024. The ornithopter — or 'thopter — is Frank Herbert's imagining of a future aircraft that mimics insect flight: wings that beat in rapid, dragonfly-like patterns rather than the fixed wings of conventional aircraft. In the novels and films, ornithopters are the primary aircraft of the Imperium — used by noble houses for transportation across the spice sands of Arrakis. Denis Villeneuve's ornithopter design for the films — elongated, insectoid, with folding wings that deploy from the fuselage — became one of the most praised vehicle designs in recent science fiction filmmaking. 01The 2025 Ornithopter is 5.5" wide — give it a branch where its wingspan can extend unobstructed. At 4.25" × 1.25" × 5.5", the ornithopter is wider than it is tall — the wingspan is the defining dimension. Position it on a long outer branch where both wing tips clear adjacent ornaments. The dragonfly-like folding wings of Villeneuve's ornithopter design are the detail that makes the craft recognizable; they need clear space to read.
