A Hamster With a Button Problem

The Cute as a Button series is built on one of the most endearing concepts in the Hallmark Keepsake catalog: a happy hamster who has discovered that colorful buttons are exactly the right size for building things in his world, and who applies this discovery to Christmas with absolute creative commitment. In 2023 he built a Christmas tree — each branch a button, the star on top a button, the whole thing assembled with the cheerful ingenuity of a creature who has found his medium. In 2024 he built a snowman — three white button discs stacked, the top hat constructed from black and red buttons, the whole figure impossibly dapper. In 2025 he built a train engine from thread spools and button wheels, complete with a button smokestack.

The concept has a beautiful internal logic: buttons are the hamster's material the way clay is a sculptor's or wool is a knitter's. Everything he makes is button-scaled and button-constructed, which means everything he makes is hamster-scaled and hamster-constructed. He is not working with found objects so much as working with his preferred medium — and his preferred medium is just very, very round.

The series was created by Nina Aubé, who has been making small creatures with large personalities for Hallmark's Keepsake Studio across multiple series. This hamster is perhaps her most artistically interesting character — not just cute (though undeniably that) but also engaged in a creative process, actively making things, a tiny craftsman at work. Each ornament catches him mid-project, and the joy on his face suggests he is doing exactly what he was put on earth to do.
