From Marvin Miller to Jason Momoa — Aquaman's Hallmark Journey

Aquaman first appeared in DC Comics in 1941 — created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger as a straightforward undersea hero with the ability to breathe underwater and communicate with sea life. For decades he occupied a middle tier of the DC universe: beloved by some, the subject of jokes about his powers by others. Aquaman first appeared on television in 1967, voiced by Marvin Miller, in a cartoon that lasted about three years before he joined the broader Super Friends ensemble. His rehabilitation in popular culture was significant and gradual — a darker, edgier comic book interpretation in the 1990s, and then Jason Momoa's incarnation in the 2017 Justice League film and the 2018 standalone Aquaman feature, which became the highest-grossing DC film at the time of its release with over $1.1 billion worldwide.

Hallmark's four Aquaman ornaments span both versions of the character. The 2017 and 2019 entries capture Jason Momoa's cinematic Aquaman — long hair, trident, the powerful physical presence that Momoa brought to the role. The 2020 Aquaman and Storm is the collection's most visually surprising entry: not the film version but the classic DC Comics Aquaman atop Storm, his giant seahorse steed — a detail from the comics that predates the films by decades and represents a character element that the movies never quite got around to using. Tips for the Collection

  Display the 2020 Aquaman and Storm prominently — it's the ornament that surprises people. The cinematic Aquaman (2017) and the miniature (2019) are recognizable to anyone who's seen the Justice League or Aquaman films. The 2020 Aquaman and Storm — classic comic styling, seahorse steed, bold flat colors — is the entry that most surprises people who only know the character from the movies. Display it where visitors can see the seahorse clearly, preferably on an outer branch where both figures are visible.

  The 2019 miniature is ideal for a small tree or a non-tree display alongside other DC miniatures. At 1.13 inches tall, the 2019 Aquaman miniature (QXM8257) by Jake Angell is the smallest entry in the collection — better suited to a tabletop miniature tree than the main Christmas tree, where it would disappear on a full-size branch. If you collect Hallmark DC or Super Heroes miniatures, it coordinates with other miniature entries in that sub-series.

  Display the 2017 and 2023 film ornaments together as the cinematic bookend. The 2017 Justice League Aquaman was Jason Momoa's DCEU debut in the role; the 2023 Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was his final film in the role. Together on adjacent branches they frame the complete arc of Momoa's Aquaman — from first appearing in the Justice League to closing the chapter six years later.
