“The Brain Buster Guy”

Ken Crow didn’t just sculpt ornaments—he built experiences . A lifelong tinkerer and illustrator, Ken joined Hallmark in 1979, and by 1983 he found his true home in the Keepsake Studio. He quickly became the go-to creator for what the team lovingly called the “brain buster” ornaments—those complex wonders filled with gears, lights, spinning trains, and music boxes.

He once said, “I like to push it further—to do something that hasn’t been done before. That’s where the magic is.”

“When you bring movement and music to a tiny scene, something comes alive. That’s when it becomes unforgettable.”

Creative Process

Ken began each design with hand-drawn sketches. He loved brainstorming mechanical challenges with engineers like Ron Carlson—sometimes for months.

He wasn’t just designing something pretty; he was building a tiny world that moved, sang, and delighted.

Legacy

Ken Crow retired in 2019 after 40 years of Christmas magic . He left behind an archive of intricate ornaments that continue to mesmerize both new collectors and longtime fans. His work stands as a testament to what happens when art meets imagination and childhood wonder is sculpted into something real.
